Hayk Piloyan: MBA student at Harvard Business School (view bio here)

LUYS scholar Hayk Piloyan and Harvard Business School graduate, was in Armenia during his spring break. Given the substantial interest among Armenian students and young professionals to pursue graduate and undergraduate education in the US, Hayk Piloyan decided to offer a special seminar. The session was aimed at explaining and guiding prospective students through the process of admissions to US Universities.

The presentation was held in English, although attendees could ask questions in Armenian as well as in Russian. Hayk strongly encouraged prospective applications to think and speak in English, in order to start acquiring and mastering the proper vocabulary. This is an important skill to successfully go through the admissions process and paperwork.

One of the participants, Hayk Hovhannisyan commented: "I have decided to travel to the US in order to learn English through a total emersion situation. This will help both with my application paperworkand later, with my courses".

Hayk Piloyan had prepared a very complete and thorough power-point presentation about the admission process. He covered all aspects of the application process from how to start, the different steps to go through, how to apply to scholarships, and so on. One of the attendees, Hayk Hovhannisyan noted that the presentation was really good, and especially helpful for first time applicants: "Before coming to the session Hayk Piloyan had advised participants to think about what their plans and interests were, what they wished to achieve, within a short and mid-term time-line, what academic disciplines were of interest to them, what programs and universities would best suited to their academic and professional interests, visit and find out more information about the universities they were interested in applying, etc. Hayk assured participants that although they didn’t need to have answers to all these questions, an initial self-assessment and goal setting would be most helpful in planning for their application process.

The session was interactive and informal. Hayk Piloyan asked all attendees to present questions that had come up during their preparation for admissions to schools abroad. He reassured prospective students that there was no “stupid question”.

Participants expressed how much impressed they were not only by Hayk Piloyan’s speaking and presentation skills, but also by his limitless generosity in sharing his knowledge and experience: "Hayk is very competent and experienced and was ready to transmit as much information to the audience as possible", - Hayk Hovhannisyan commented. Another participant, Vladimir Khachatryan added: "You can tell that Hayk felt a great deal of responsibility towards his younger peers". For Vladimir it was a new approach to see how people share their knowledge and experience: "I now understand how to apply with a more systematic approach to the admission process, and to optimally use the available resources".

The LUYS seminar offered by Hayk Piloyan lasted for almost three hours. Participants tried to get as much information as possible. Vladimir Khachatryan commented: "Hayk was more than a Harvard graduate student giving advice, he become a friend to each and everyone of the participants". Another participant, Hayk Hovhannisyan added: "I feel that I have a new friend in Boston, who is always ready to support and share his experience with me. I hope he will also be able to help me find an apartment in Boston next month".
