"Luys" Student's Internship in Central Bank of Armenia

Sergey Shahverdyan is a first year PhD student at Oxford University in England. In January 2010, during his winter break spent in Armenia, Sergey had the opportunity to do an internship at the Central Bank of Armenia (CBA).
Sergey Shahverdyan:
I am very grateful that the Central Bank of Armenia accepted me as an intern during the short period I was in Armenia. This was a truly valuable experience. It helped me understand how my studies and research could apply in the reality of a work environment.
My PhD thesis at Oxford University is about quantitative risk management. I study the methods and processes used to supervise and manage the risks of an asset portfolio, or the monetary stability of financial institutions. The Central Bank of Armenia offered the perfect environment to see such operations in practice. I was also able to have a direct look at how the bank works with the world of industry. This aspect of the Bank’s work gave me an insight about the know-how needed to respond and solve a wide range of truly complex questions.
This internship helped me define which kind of knowledge and skills I would need to acquire and perfect in order to make a valuable contribution to the working environment of a financial institution.
My goal is to further develop the use of financial mathematics that may bring innovative and successful applications to the field of banking.
Ideally, for the duration of my graduate studies, I would be able to continue alternating internships and research, and going back and forth between Armenia and the UK. My wish is to continue developing strong links with Financial Institutions in Armenia in order to keep close to the realty of the country’s needs. In return, I hope to gradually contribute a new set of Knowledge acquired abroad and through my research at Oxford University.
