Develop Armenia

The Luys Develop Armenia Program (LDAP): a gradual implementation of the program starting in 2010.

The Luys Develop Armenia Program Builds Learning Networks and Offers a New Kind of Learning

The challenge of the Luys Develop Armenia Program is to build a face-to-face learning environment that is a small-scale representation of our world – to build a micro-world where people can discover how their individual projects contribute not only to a global perspective but also to Armenia and its youth.

The LSU builds a network of networks, knitting together "invisible colleges" of researchers, policy makers, and entrepreneurs in a rich range of fields. Every summer, the Luys Foundation brings together pioneering thinkers and practitioners to live and work together, to share current activity from the worlds of information technology and media design, learning theory, entrepreneurial business, public administration and law, music and the fine arts, and cross-cultural communication.

Economic and technological change is becoming so rapid that the key competitive skill – for individuals, for organizations, and for nations – is skill in learning. The central task is not to learn a fixed set of skills and information, but to learn how to recognize and continuously appropriate new knowledge. The new economic reality of lean production and continuous innovation requires a corresponding new kind of education –– learning that is not separated from doing –– interactive, collaborative learning as a life-long process.

The Luys Develop Armenia Program (LDAP) offers a physical setting for the emergence of an international culture and offers conviviality as the catalyst for learning. LSU recognizes the art of sociability as a necessary ingredient for any genuine collaboration. Here people have the chance to share a common environment for living, working, and thinking together, and open their mentalities in unforeseen ways.

The explosion of media like the World Wide Web, electronic mail, teleconferencing, instant message, low cost voice over IP telephone communications, and on-line networks has made it possible for people to communicate without regard to distance or time-zones. Unexpectedly, the intensified use of these communication tools has made people feel an even greater need for face-to-face collaboration, because face-to-face communication is absolutely necessary for appreciating the multidimensional quality of individuals and what they have to offer.

We see LSU as the intellectual workshop, the atelier, the studio, the conference room, and the forum for a network of communities that already exists across cultural, national, and professional boundaries. As we realize the emergence of an international culture, we want to give it a physical setting of a new type that can be propagated throughout the world.

The Luys Develop Armenia Program Constructs a Fund of Shared Knowledge

The Luys Foundation is a place where people are, by turns, learners and teachers, old hands and new explorers. Even experts expect to find their knowledge deepened and extended by the freshness of the novices.
At the LSU, we want to work at recognizing the existing best practices and build from there.

Ongoing Mentor Program - Brainstorming Ateliers

This program assembles a community of thinkers and doers who are committed to meet each summer around a specific theme, to bring state-of-the-art knowledge to create a new synthesis to be shared by the international community. The people who create and take part in the Ateliers are people who are known in the world and in their fields for their significant ideas and contributions. They will continue working and thinking together on-line during the rest of the academic year.

Heritage Ateliers

A program, where Luys students and scholars will have a chance to learn about the riches of the Armenian Culture, its language, history, folk songs. A place where they will have an insight in who is Armenia and all it has to offer.

Information and Exploratory Ateliers

The worldwide network of innovators associated with the Luys Foundation is engaged in a continuous process of learning from each other. This creates a natural channel for disseminating the latest developments in research directions, products, and best practices from a wide range of fields. This is a channel for disseminating new tools for learning and teaching.

Children's Atelier

A program where high-school children of the neighborhood can benefit from the richness of the on-going activities at the LSU. Here these young people will have a place to express themselves and to gain access to technology, a place where we invite them to dream big.

Mentor Program for High School Children in Armenia to Open Pathways to Higher Education

Luys undergraduate and graduate students teach a class of their choice to high school students in addition to keeping in regular contact during the school year. This is an opportunity for teenagers to learn directly from people who are more mature, but still young, and to engage in meaningful discussions to shape their future.

Corporate and Research Program

The Luys Foundation will arrange for contacts, introductions, brainstorming sessions that serve the agenda the Luys Scholars-Student and the Armenian corporate and research partners. This is an opportunity for companies wishing to expand both in Armenia and internationally.

Innovation Competition

The Luys Innovation Competition (modeled on the MIT-Student-IDEA Competition) provides an opportunity for Luys students to apply their creative ideas for projects that make a positive impact in Armenia. Participants work in teams to develop designs, plans, strategies, materials and mechanisms that benefit communities in Armenia. Luys will present awards to the selected Luys Innovation project that will be announced during the Develop Armenia Program. The Luys Innovation teams winning these awards can take an effective step toward resolving community challenges. The Luys Innovation Competition highlights the Luys Foundation’s commitment to support student enterprise. It provides a chance for students to be creative, and recognizes their ability to do important work for Armenian communities.

Belonging to the Luys Learning Network will be an incentive for excellent students to study and learn to their maximum capacity by developing a complementary (extra-curricular) program in which students can interact, collaborate and work with top experts the best scientists, professors, teachers and professionals in a multidisciplinary learning environment.

The LLuys Develop Armenia Program Plants Seeds for Personal Growth and Commitment Students at LSU enjoy an infusion of commitment and passion and vision – the encouragement to imagine and build a better future. They are asked to reflect on what ingredients have gone into making the best learning situations they have encountered, and what creates the transformative power of learning. Understanding this process will contribute to their own growth. In our brainstorming sessions at LSU we will make ourselves aware not only of the present reality and challenges, but of the vision that goes beyond it to a sustainable world. We confront the basic questions: What do we need to understand? Where are we going? What do we already have to build from?
