When I was eight, my father gave me advice that stayed with me: “We judge ourselves by what we feel capable of doing, while others judge us by what we have done”. Henceforth, I stopped being boastful and started to prove people that I could be unique one just like Superman. My experiences, later made me realize that I could not be a hero with extra powers and the only way to leave an honorable trace in this world was my involvement in Science. I started surfing on Wikipedia looking for a suitable profession, a field where I can excel and implement my ideas. I decided on Engineering…
Reflecting on the past, I realized that my path towards Engineering started with the first Chemistry lesson. When the teacher entered the classroom, I felt an immense desire to prove that I would become the best student she has ever had. I worked hard days and nights, striving for the teacher’s appreciation and recognition. In the end, I have achieved my short-term goal, but I did not feel self-satisfied yet. Still having the feeling of ‘thirst’ to be acknowledged, I’ve participated in the International Chemistry Olympiads held in UK, Japan and Ukraine, receiving 3-rd prize diploma. This was a unique opportunity to discover and compete with outstanding students from all over the world. Truly, this proved to be a decisive and crucial experience. Furthermore, in 2009 I signed up for the Second Conference of National Academy, and was proud to be honored to have a presentation on "DNA implantation into a cell without causing semi-functionality”. The Minister of Defense rewarded me a special award for my presentation and encouraged me to explore Engineering more deeply and fundamentally.
Owing to another fact, that in recent years, most of my friends have been admitted to MIT, Stanford, Cambridge and other prestigious universities, gave me the background to make a decision to choose a preferred university related to my professional goals. I looked up the details about their universities: advantages and disadvantages, professor and student relationships, histories and communities. After having studied for a long time and having compared the mentioned characteristic features, different learning environments, my selection rested on the University of Toronto. At present, being admitted the University of Toronto, I can see new horizons open for my long-term goals. To my mind, the most significant perspective is, to become part of Luys Community, an area where Armenian youth from all over the world marshal and prepare upcoming generations for their better future. To put my statement concisely and precisely “LUYS - Light for Undertakings of Young Scholars”.
